Easy Anti Aging Tips for Dry Skin: December 2011

Easy Anti Aging Tips for Dry Skin: December 2011
Dry Skin...itchy, scaly, redness, sensitivity, wrinkles etc.

Winter is the time when our skin dries out, gets red, sensitive, itchy or flakey and looks older due to more wrinkles caused by lack of hydration.

What causes this besides the cold winter weather?

After doing over 4 thousand facials and body treatments, I feel that there are 4 major factors causing dryness and aging to the skin. These are:

1. Genetics
2. Environment (outside and indoors)
3.Toxins
4. Stress - all of the first 3 stress our organs compromising our true natural
Immune system to work proficiently to repair and regenerate
healthy cells.

Our largest organ in our body is our Skin. Mother nature gave it a protective shell called the acid mantle that naturally prevent moisture from leaving the skin and protects the skin from environmental damage.

However due to most of the processed foods we all have eaten in the last 25 years, our immune, defense systems have been compromised...not as sharp as our forefathers. So please start eating more organic foods and slow foods. Prices will go down when we do this too.

Not only processed food for the skin but way tooooooo many chemicals and fragrances in products for the face and body are causing bad things happening in our bodies...organs, bloodstream...and onto the surface of the skin. This axiom is so true:" Our skin is our past!" So many chemicals produce toxins in our body, causing illness, irritation, breakouts, aging and stressing our largest organ, the skin.

Fortunately, organic products and Ayurvedic products are on the rise now in popularity especially where I live and work in Boulder, Colorado. Start researching, using the products at least for a month to see how your body and face start healing, correcting itself naturally as mother nature planned it.

In the meantime try doing these easy tips for more hydrated and younger looking skin in the winter:

A. Don't take long Hot showers or baths. Hot water dries out skin. Use lukewarm water about 5 to 10 min. in length.

B. Out of bath or shower, pat down body with towel and apply moisturizer to moist(not dry) body. This seals the moisture in better.

C. Exfoliate face weekly with lactic acid. This will help clean build ups on surface of skin and speed up your natural exfoliating process which slows down as we age. After we slough off dead skin, our skin absorbs better things like serums, moisturizers, and feels smoother and looks younger.

D. Exfoliate body with unrefined sugar and oils, and massage hydrating oils in your body. Nothing beats this treatment for soft, smooth, hydrated skin. All spas do this. I love this for my skin. My skin gets scaly so I exfoliate and wash off, pat dry and apply hydrating Ayurvedic oils to my body after each bath or shower. I've seen a big improvement in texture of my skin.

E. Eat and/or take essential fatty acids like omega 3 and 6, fatty fish weekly like salmon. When I started taking fish oils, my skin started looking and feeling more hydrated. It never itched like it did in past winters. Honey, avocados, water, teas, aloe vera are great...both externally and internally for dry skin conditions. I even use tea on the face. Look on the tea box..for irritation use tea that says soothing...chamomile, rose. Just use it lukewarm.

F. There is less humidity indoors so start running water in all rooms.Get a water fall, plants ( you have to water them), humidifier. If you don't have toddlers, I've put water in bath tub and rooms next to it are more hydrated.
A toddler could accidentally fall in tub and drown. I just recently bought a 20 gallon fish tank. Now my den is hydrated and love watching my two fish. Very soothing, relaxing and hydrating at same time.

G. Don't use soaps....I rather you use lukewarm water. Commercial soaps, cleansers have chemicals that strip the acid mantle i.e. your natural barrier
of sebum (oil) .Plus some chemicals are toxic!
Your natural skin's ph is acid 4.4 to 5.6. Most commercial soaps are alkaline ph of 9 or 10. So find a neutral ph (water) or closer to skin's ph.
Organic and Ayurvedic have the best ones I feel.

H. Hot tubs are fun especially in winter. Just make sure you wash off chlorine under shower with luke warm water and moisturize damp skin.
Sauna is good even though it's heat. It enhances the blood flow and the skin is nourished from inside out. Just don't overdo these. I cover head with wet cold towel while in sauna and steam.

I. Nourishment -- internally eat winter foods like winter squashes. One of my son's favorite is acorn squash. I cut in half, scoop out seeds, put little maple syrup and brown sugar and bake both halves upright in oven 350for about 25 minutes. Toast seeds and eat later. I read it's number one source of alpha-carotene and beta carotene, Vitamin C, manganese mineral and is an anti inflammatory food.

J. Hydrate skin with organic products like Shea butter, aloe Vera, Ayurvedic herbs both morning and night. I also like applying hydrating serums first to my face and then moisturize. Use SPF on top of these if going out doors in sun.Use Lip balm and eye creams both morning and night time. Remember you repair, regenerate your skin at night while you sleep. So night is very important to "treat" any problem like dryness or irritation. Day time helps seal in the moisture with creamy moisturizers and use mineral SPF .

So to sum up:
Lukewarm water internally and externally. Shorter baths/showers.
Hydrate body and skin on moist skin...not dry skin.
Essential fatty acids internally and externally.
Exfoliate body and face. Lactic acid best for hydration for face.
Serums, oils or moisturizers, eye and lip balms...all organic, not chemical.
Eat nourishing winter foods..nuts, fish, winter squash..organic if you can.
Hydrate indoors...waterfalls, plants, humidifier, fish tank.
Find something to bless or be thankful for every morning when wake up and just before going to bed.

Easy anti-aging skin tips: Hyper pigmentation

Easy anti-aging skin tips: Hyper pigmentation

Just like in your garden the leaves of your plants and deciduous trees start turning brown, yellow and red. Just like the brown spots start popping out on your face from the summer's sun and our skin is dry, dull and looks old.
What do we do?

Start getting enzyme peels!

I am now a big believer of enzyme peels instead of chemical peels. Very simply, they clean the epidermis without killing the epidermis like chemicals do.

I want healthy "peaches and cream" skin for me and my clients. Not skin that looks as if it has no "life force" in it. You know what I mean when you see the white- faced, lifeless skin on some women. Men want a healthy-looking woman, freckles and all.

Over time (about 28 days) our skin on our face looks dull so this is a good time for an enzyme peel. It cleans out the tough keratin layer, helps unclog pores, stimulates the cells to wake up, look alive, look young and sharp, and seems to fade hyper pigmentation.

And the best part, it's done naturally, not with toxic (aging) chemicals but lovely fruits and vegetables like pineapple, papaya, pumpkin, yams. Great for the Holidays! You can't eat it though.

When we meditate, take long walks loving nature, eat healthy, our pure essence in us wants "regeneration, renewal, moderation, not over indulging in any thing". Think about that. Return to things you did as a child. And see your skin glow!

Always sending love to your skin and you!

Easy skin care tips for Anti-Aging:

Easy skin care tips for Anti-Aging:

Your mantra: chemicals are toxins and over time AGE your skin!

One of the best ingredient for your skin is LOVE! Easy to do but we seldom do it!

As I have related skin care tips to gardening, I really started giving time to See and Be with my not-so robust tomato plants and herbs . I love the smell of the tomato vines...so I lingered over them sending gratitude for their aroma.

I was really appreciating them, I guess you would say loving them. Then I noticed a revelation: when we are in the presence of someone, Be and See that person. Appreciating something about them. Yes, it would be super nice to say a nice thing about that person. We all love a nice sincere compliment and if not vocal, a smile or send love mentally.

I noticed my plants are the same but now know why I try every year to develop a Green Thumb. I'm being taught by the Souls in my plants to continually Be and See them and others. Thank you plants! They might not give me great tomatoes but they have given me the best Fruit...that revelation!

So send love to your skin...your largest organ. Give it a compliment, a smile or mental love. Imagine perfect Skin...your skin shining brightly.

Sending love and appreciation to you all,
BeeGee Stivers

P.S. Between the hours of 1 and 3 a.m. the products you put on your skin treat and repair your cells. Use your best stuff i.e. serum, eye cream. Your skin at night is on the Offensive Team. Go Broncos!

In the morning use products that help keep moisture on your skin such as moisturizers, eye cream, sun screen.Your skin is on the Defensive Team. Go Broncos!

Easy skin tips for great skin:

Easy skin tips for great skin:

I just saw a sign on a garden center saying " Bring in your sick plants and let the experts look at it."

So, is your skin sick? Do you think you should come in for the experts to help you fix it?

Have a facial ....hopefully with organic products. I didn't get a real one until I was 49 because it was considered extravagant and my skin looked good.

Well, let me tell you how I loved it, and how relaxed I felt plus looking and feeling YOUNGER and clean. I was hooked and that wonderful experience led me to signing up for aesthetic school. ( my past was p.r.and advertising and single mom). And now my skin ,as my peers tell me, look ten years younger and I'm a believer in the benefit of facials.

So let me tell you what a typical facial protocol is: usually 55 to 60 minutes.
A. Cleansing
B. Exfoliation
C. Steaming
D. Extractions if necessary. You can tell them not to extract. 99% of clogged skin are removed from great exfoliation. No pain at all.
E. Relaxing massage of face, neck, shoulders, back, hands and feet.
F. Mask to treat conditions
G. Serum To treat conditions
H. Moisturizer

A great facialist would never embarrass you or make you feel bad about your skin, but would lovingly educate you on how to improve your skin. I think we are therapists sometimes because we listen a lot and are non judgmental but create an atmosphere where you feel safe and comforted.

I lovingly send love to you and your skin, beegee stivers

P.S. Extra tip for great skin: if you have oily skin, don't over exfoliate and wash it too often. When your skin is dried out from above, it tells your skin to produce more oil. Ugh!

Easy tips to correct or eliminate most zits or acne!!

Easy tips to correct or eliminate most zits or acne!!

Think of your skin as a garden. If you are a rose bush or a tomato bush, and your leaves or flower/fruits get holes, or breakouts in them it could be one or two things:

Internal problems or external problems , right?

The same thing with your face and body. Acne, zits, irritations can be caused by internal and/or external factors. So as I tell my clients let's find the cause. Let's be the DETECTIVE! And then eliminate for great skin!

Possible Internal Causes:
1. Food allergies - milk, cheese, gluten, nuts, etc. Go without one product at
a time ( 2 weeks) and see if better. If not, eliminate another etc.
2. Toxins - from pesticides in foods; chemicals in skin care products, work,
atmosphere etc. Go organic with foods and topical products.
When you have toxins internally your liver and kidneys are working
overtime to remove them causing breakouts, acne on face and body.
3. Hormones - especially in teenagers (boys especially) and pre-menopausal
women. See doctor who doesn't believe in chemicals, drugs as first
approach. Try alternative first, if possible.

Possible External Causes:
1. Bacteria on sheets, pillow cases, cell phones, helmets, bands around head,
hats, shampoos with suds. Wash often in organic. Cleanse cell phones
weekly with alcohol. Turn over pillow cases.
2. Kissing - a lot of beards, mustaches have bacteria and cause acne. So
wash before and after and enjoy kissing! Get your mate to wash too.
3. Working out - high levels of humidity and sweating cause acne on back.
Shower and wear dry shirt afterwards.
4. Atmosphere - smoke, dirt, chemicals in air. Wash well afterwards and
protect face, body with mask, clothes, good mineral makeup.
5. Razors - try electric or a better brand of razor.
6. Hands on face- even if your hands are washed I bet the door handle or
your keys are loaded with bacteria. So don't touch face!
7. Pencils, pens often go in your mouth while you are studying. Loaded
with bacteria. Major clogged pores around the lips from that. Keep
objects out of your mouth!
8. Old makeup, eye shadow, mascara, dirty face brushes, lipstick.
Clean brushes; some time you can wipe eyeshadow, lipstick with
alcohol.
9. Oils from hair. When brushing, cover up your back with shirt.
10. Loofas, facial and body brushes are loaded wit h bacteria. Use your
hands or clean wash cloths.

Extra tip: the best faces I've seen are from people who never touch their skin!
Another tip: Local honey eaten daily greatly helps control allergies. Have it in your tea, bread or a tablespoon daily. Local honey though.

Sending love to your beautiful face, beegee

Easy Tips for Great Skin

Continuing with your skin as your garden, let's make sure the soil is correct for growing beautiful flowers...that's the pH balance of the soil.

Your outer skin (epidermis) is slightly acidic, a pH level of 4.6 to 6.2 (7pH is neutral like water). Bacteria thrives in an alkaline environment (over 7ph) so in order to prevent breakouts we have to maintain your ideal pH.

Soap, some cleansers, some toners are very alkaline so look for products that say "balance" your pH. When your epidermis is in balance it holds moisture (less wrinkles), holds in nutrients and protects you from ultraviolet radiation. Yes, prevents you from AGING! And reduce further breakouts for acne!

What can you do: look for "balance" pH in soaps, toners. Avoid alkaline products like body soaps on your slightly acidic face. Start using organic (non toxic) products.

Extra tip: your eyelids are the thinnest skin on your body (0.05 mm) so avoid lotions, moisturizers in that area. Use only Eye cream so that area won't clog and cause trouble. Remember moisturizers seep up to lower eye, so don't go too close.)
